I'd say the ability to customize the layout would be the key thing. If you want to add some more social things to your customized portal that would be a nice feature. Some people really want to avoid the "old" news only look.
Oh, please.
I think it's because they have nothing else to do over there. Here is what I associate with the Netscape brand ever since AOL acquired it:
-"beta testing" new ideas for AOL
-a "guinea pig" brand used for market research for AOL
-a set of technologies used as a chip with partners like Microsoft
-lousy, unreleiable "low priority" "expendable" email servers and services
They did the *exact same thing* with the Compuserve browser when they acquired that brand, too, and ran it on beta versions of Mozilla! and obsessive advertising traps...
What do users want? Users liked what you did and are now confused again, thanks to you. Once again, users are made to feel powerless and stupid, because that is exactly what AOL truly believes that they are (and thus attracts such.)
You guys should just rename all of these services and technologies to "AOL beta" (since that's what it is) and hire a couple of kids from MIT who can make the Netscape brand actually stand for someting concrete. It's a stronger brand than AOL, IMO.
AOL probably sells all of your Netscape browsing habits to third parties, if I know them at all.
They should really also just rename AOL to Netscape and vice-versa, cannibalizing the AOL brand (not the other way around!) for the sake of the Netscape brand, but it seems that the 20-somethings running the Powerpoints in the meetings haven't figured that all out yet because all of thier graphs are showing data that mixes fickle customers they shouldn't even want with die hard loyalists and first adopters...
my 2 cents...
Great to hear that you are working on increasing users experience. Since when we can expect the chainges?:)
Plain and simple, anyway you put it since AOL took over netscape, it SUCKS. The e-mail is getting just like snail mail, to slow and you just hope you can get it. Gave up on the NEW browser, since it did not work with netscape e mail.
I had been a loyal netscape user since its inception until a year or so ago, when several versions(7.2 and 8) of the netscape browser became unstable and began freezing or dying during every experience.
Anything being done about this for newer browsers?
The former open system worked fine more or less, although clinton bloggers engaged in abusive actions and insulted me. Then they erased my posts. But the new format (the present one did not even let me comment. Rather, it asked me all kind of questions and said I would receive my code two days later, but no code arrived.
I hope your anounced change is going to let moderate Republicans like me in. It is boring when only abusive democrats dominate and are let inside internet mail.
Bye, Tschrny9
Netscape's transitions are a real bore, I'm sorry to report. Just want to see some headlines and check my email--is that asking too much.
It is, because netscapes' ad revenue format neccessitate those changes. Slower boot up. More ad garbage space. Less utilitarian space for the email user.
But netscape has touted the oppty to advertisers' to come on-board. More revenue for Netscape--Less facile for the email user.
Shall I really move toward another browser for usage(when does that browser change as well, though..)...
Am looking for something very simple, and, really detest the 'britney, models, etc. stories--highly unedifying.
To start with I believe your vision of Netscape development goes in a good direction. For me its obvious that there is a lot of work to be done. The only think that I will complain about is the speed of your adjustments. Cant you develop it a bit faster?
I see that some ppl here are complaining but Im of different opinion.
"We look forward to unveiling a new social news site as soon as possible." This is probably what most of us is wating for. Im more than shure that you will rock us.
"The ability to post, comment, rate and share the news that's most relevant to you is as important to us as it is to you." you are right stating this.
I believe those are features the whole community would be more than pleased to see on Netscape. Best regards
As mentioned by Mike earlier I'm wondering if this is more about driving traffic to AOL and away from Netscape. I think the Netscape brand is still strong don't let AOL mess it up. Looks like Arrington was half right.
Maybe this is off-topic, but could someone please, please, please actually delete spam from Netscape in (close to) real-time? I have personally marked dozens of posts as spam on the religion channel; they are easy to spot with names like "wet4984827" and "mature398171." Please, please, please.
Thanks,
-JAK
I see you are planing to make many chanegs, the only question is why you are planning to make changes to a successful idea that works to majority of the community?
I like my original Netscape page.
When did AOL/Netscape start using the Yahoo format for their pages?
Sad day when Aol got Netscape.
I would confirm the email if I could find it.
The problem of integration of my Netscape account has never been resolved by AOL.
So I do not use it.

Although the site has bogged down of late because of the increase in traffic I assume. I would not want to see much in the way of changes to anything other than infrastructure. It was only a month ago When the AOL Netscape portal rolled out for those who wanted the "old" netscape. Why do they need our Netscape as well? This doesn't make sense to me. Nor would it seem to make sense to any of the members who chose to sign up since the launch of the new Netscape. Netscape's public numbers sure look good, why on earth make drastic changes to a successful idea? Only in corporate boardrooms can decisions like this fly.
