For the web sanity, preserve browsers diversity. Use a "minor browser" ! Opera, Konqueror, Safari. These are great.
For those of you that have been around since the inception of Netscape, you remember the origins of this once great company. I remember when I first saw Mosaic after talking to a friend that attended UIUC. The Internet was a great tool before graphics, but it became a great tool after graphics were added.
Netscape and it's founder Marc Andreeson were pioneers in what will always be known as "The Information Revolution"
Back when Mosaic/Netscape first launched, the Internet faithful were extremely fearful of what would happen should the capitalist pigs of corporate America find out how to make money off this brave new technological world. Everyone shunned postings on usenet that were commercial in nature. That all went by the wayside as everyone realized how much $$ could be made when Netscape went public on that special day in August, 1995.
True story...I owned a small internet marketing company back then, and was trying to figure out how to make money for my new organization. One of the small business owners I spoke with told me that he figured the Internet would simply be "The CB (1970's) of the 1990's." As I explained to him, he was oh so wrong!
P.S. take a look at my ad site. This is what the Internet has become. Thanks Netscape R.I.P
It's kind of reaching to say that Netscape was the browser that "started it all." Wouldn't Mosaic get those honors? Sure, Netscape extended HTML in all sorts of nifty ways, but IE did the same thing (although in much uglier ways.)
I can't say this is a big surprise. I don't actually know anybody who still uses Netscape, everyone having switched over to Mozilla and/or Firefox.
Goodbye, old friend.
To be honest I never rated Nutscrape, so it would be worth seeing Navigator getting laid to rest.
Hate Microsoft move... but love Firefox like you wouldnt believe. Come on Mozilla, let´s fuck Microsoft right over!
Netscape was dead long ago. If AOL switched to gecko for its engine instead of IE
things might be different. When Netscape started to offer only Windows inversion
7 or 8 something it showed it still had a STRONG MSFT tie. They only went to court
because of pier pressure. Long live ........
This is a REAL SHAME!!!
I am using Netscape 9.0.0.5 as my main Mac browser these days, and it’s great - to me it’s like Firefox++ these days. And since it’s built on Firefox 2.0.0.11, it’s not only an up-to-date browser but it also has added features.
I really thought Netscape 9 heralded the return of Netscape - but I guess the rest of the world wasn’t paying any attention anymore.
I’d like to thank all the Netscape 9 programmers who put this fine release together, all in vain.
Netscape was buried by the success of FireFox. Simple.
"Hand over the reigns"
You mean "reins", as in "a strap fastened to a bit by which a rider or driver controls an animal —usually used in plural", with the sense of "controlling or guiding power".
Thanks for all those releases over the years. If users want an integrated browser + mail + chat + composer Internet Suite like Netscape Gold through Netscape 6, Mozilla.com/projects/ also hosts the SeaMonkey Internet Suite. I use both Firefox and SeaMonkey.
BTW, what's with all the spam/advertising URLs in the first few comments?!!
> So sad to see the end of the browser that started it all.
What, you mean Mosaic?

> This is the end of an era. I can't believe you're giving up on this now.
Many of the Netscape developers became part of the Mozilla Foundation ages ago. There's a reason for that. It starts with "F" and ends with "irefox".
> Sorry to see you give up to IE
Considering AOL spun off and funded the Mozilla Foundation so their work would outlast Netscape, and that work begat Firefox, I'd say AOL is responsible for making sure there was going to be competition to IE for a very long time.
AOL ruined Netscape plain and simple!
Just when Netscape released it's best effort to date with NS9. In my opinion this version is the best browser available.
The only question I have is if Messenger will still be an alpha release, or if there will be a full (non-beta) release of it by February..
The only question I have is whether Messenger will remain an alpha release, or if a full (non-beta) release will be completed by February...

Sorry to see you give up to IE"
Did you not read this posting? They didn't give up to IE. They gave up to Firefox. The browser that made the Mozilla browsing engine popular. The browser Netscape has been built around for years now.
AOL's doing the right thing, the same thing they did when they made the Mozilla Foundation. Leave this in the hands of the people that do this well.
Netscape was a grand browser. But if the developers aren't developing, the product's not innovating, and the browser's going to die.
