"Hand over the reigns"
You mean "reins", as in "a strap fastened to a bit by which a rider or driver controls an animal —usually used in plural", with the sense of "controlling or guiding power".
Thanks for all those releases over the years. If users want an integrated browser + mail + chat + composer Internet Suite like Netscape Gold through Netscape 6, Mozilla.com/projects/ also hosts the SeaMonkey Internet Suite. I use both Firefox and SeaMonkey.
BTW, what's with all the spam/advertising URLs in the first few comments?!!
a little sad to hear that this is the end of the road for Netscape, the browser. i remembered the first time i used Netscape Navigator in 1995, when my first year at university in Malaysia introduced me to the wonderful world of the Internet. Netscape was the first software application i used to browse the world wide web. Mosaic was also installed in some of the machines at my university and i did try out Mosaic, but at the time Netscape was the best program available to browse the web. Netscape's Communicator internet suite which included an email client and simple webpage creator was a favourite of mine.
can't tell you how much i appreciate the efforts of those who have worked for Netscape. if it wasn't for the people who contributed in making this piece of software, the Internet would still be inaccessible to the masses in the mid-1990s.
Netscape, you leave us a legacy. and even though you will be discontinued as an updated software product, we still have your little cousin Firefox to remind us about you. don't forget to say 'Hi!' to your uncle Mosaic for us in software heaven... cheers! :)
Oh, no!!!! PLEASE DON'T KILL NETSCAPE!!!!! I tried Firefox several months ago and DIDN'T LIKE IT!!!! There are two features in Netscape that are NOT in Firefox as far as I can tell. The first is the ability to have mutliple user identities with different home pages, preferences, and bookmarks. I work from home. With this feature, I can keep my work persona and personal stuff separate. The second is that, although I told Firefox to open separate tabs, when I would have one page open then select another from my bookmarks, it would not open a separate tab -- the bookmark selection would replace my current page. With Netscape, the bookmark selection would open a separate tab. The ONLY quibble I had with Netscape -- and the reason I tried Firefox -- was that it would freeze frequently when I opened it. This occurred far too often to please me, but was still a lesser disadvantage than the two I cite with Firefox.
PLEASE, PLEASE, CONTINUE NETSCAPE!!!!!
I haven't used Netscape for years - I found it unwieldy around version 5, so I changed to Mac IE (rather better than the Windows version) then Firefox, which I think is pretty good.
That said, I used to use Netscape around 10 years ago on HP Unix machines, and I remember the early years of the web (back when the internet was called the information superhighway) when Netscape was the big shiny new thing and IE was just a rebranded Mosaic.
What I've found odd is that people here who still use Netscape seem to find fault with Firefox. Netscape is Firefox plus a couple of extensions and with a different skin (and brand). As I said, I no longer use the software, but I would imagine that you can get very similar functionality with Firefox, the right skin and those extensions which you want (and they install very easily).
The one thing that can't be replicated is the brand, which seems dead anyway. Netscape was Navigator (and the other tools in the long-abandoned suite). So will the brand be passed on to Mozilla / somewhere else so that those who feel a deep emotional attachment to it can continue to feel that deep emotional attachment?
What thing happened?I want my Netscape Browser!
Netscape 4/6/7 users have an option that resembles what they're used to - the Mozilla Suite. For a long time, The Mozilla Suite was called just Mozilla. Mozilla is what Netscape 6/7 was built on. When the Mozilla Foundation decided to focus on Firefox, they dropped official development of the Mozilla Suite, but the community has kept it going with a new name - SeaMonkey - which was the unofficial name of the Mozilla Suite anyway. SeaMonkey looks pretty much and works very much like Netscape 4/6/7, but it's built on the same Gecko code base as Firefox and Thunderbird, which means it has and will continue to have the latest bug fixes and enhancements. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
What would it take to get AOL to redirect the old Netscape download links to GetFirefox.com?
I believe this would be performing a great service to the public. There are still many old pages that direct users there.
The page itself could still be a plug for the portal, but within contain a "Download Firefox" link.
How about killing the AOL custom browser instead?
Can't believe it!!!
I hope you guys re-consider your decisions.
I use Netscape Navigator and Messenger and I am happy with them. I remember using a Netscape browser in the library before I got my own computer. I am sorry to hear the bad news. I have Firefox, Opera, Seamonkey, Maxthon, and Internet Explores. I use Netscape products almost exclusively. They are user friendly and are a joy to use.
As a Mac user, I quit Netscape back in the OS 9 days, as the versions after 4.x were a mess; I switched to iCab for the last couple before switching to OS X.
But I was really happy to see the recent revival of Netscape v.9, which I gather was just a skinned Firefox, but somehow seemed more polished and Mac-like than Ff, which I've never liked (I use Safari primarily, with Camino as a backup). It's been so nice to see that familiar old Netscape icon in the Dock!
What I'd like to see, now AOL's given up Netscape entirely (?), is for Mozilla to take the name back and rename Firefox as Netscape. Then we could have the pleasure of watching Netscape taking back market share from Internet Exploder!
I'm so sad. I remember how I loved NS 3 and 4 back in the 90s... I remained loyal until Netscape 7.2 more or less, though I used NS 8 and 9. Netscape is such a wonderful word, a strong brand which brings a lot of memories to most of us.
AOL was the worst thing ever happened to Netscape. But fortunately, Mozilla picked up NS and gave a new life.
I just want to say thank you to Mr. Andreessen and everyone involved with the development of Netscape. You allowed millions of people around the world to discover the fantastic Internet... I love the N on the green and black background.
Mozilla should keep the brand. Don't let those AOL betrayers to keep it.
Everyone, go and get Firefox (Opera, Safari, Flock, etc.). We can beat'em...
RIP Netscape, we'll really miss you.
永别了,Netscape。
I remember when we bought Netscape and I thought this would be the death of Microsoft. Like Ted said, Interactive Services will be Microsoft's Vietnam. When we didn't integrate Netscape as the in-house browser and Mark was given a token job, as well as his left coast people, I knew something was wrong.
Netscape will always be number one.

This is a real shame, Navigator 9 is a *good* product (better than FF in some respects), RIP Netscape.
