We're still a little stuffed from Thanksgiving and feeling a bit sluggish this Monday. In the meantime, here's some more original Netscape Video content from the set of Scrubs:

Remember, you can embed our videos in your own website or blog and present it in clean format by adding "-c" after embed in the src URL.

Video Player Revisited

Posted by Chris Finke

› tags: api, embedded flash player, netscape video, video hosting

We rolled out two major changes to the Netscape video player today:

1. You can now syndicate videos in a cleaner, more minimalistic video player:

As you can see, the title bar is hidden, as are most of the icons on the splash screen. To use this player on your site, simply replace the "embed" in the syndication code with "embed-c":

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.netscape.com/embed-c/480/HZLODVUCOSGKKVGKGWYR"></script>

The "c" stands for "cause you're worth it!"

2. Netscape Video now supports all video aspect ratios!

You can now upload videos to Netscape in any aspect ratio (standard 4:3, 16:9 widescreen, anamorphic widescreen, etc.), and the player will resize to fit, keeping the title bar and the controls a constant height:

The iPod-compatible version of the video will be presented using the original dimensions as well. For those of you keeping score at home, that makes Netscape the only major video sharing service to offer this kind of aspect-ratio-indifference. Happy uploading!

On User Submitted Video and Our Terms of Service

Posted by Karina Longworth

› tags: editorial issues, netscape video, terms of use, TermsOfUse

This morning, one of our members submited a story with the sole purpose of using the comments to allege that he had been censored by Netscape anchors due to our political bias. We closed that post because the intent of the post had nothing to do with the article the post linked to. I'm writing this blog entry to try to answer that user's allegations.

Yesterday, the Netscape member in question submitted a video titled "Die Taliban Die". The video was set to song in which the phrase "die motherf****er die" was repeated over and over again; the images involved war footage and titles reading "die terrorist die". The video was reported as offensive, and as it violated our Terms of Use (see specifically section 8), we removed it (see Terms of Use, section 13). The Netscape member asked why his video was taken down, and was told by an Anchor that the title violated our Terms of Use. The member then reposted the video, unaltered but for a new title; it was reported again, and as the video still contained content that violated our terms of use, we pulled the video again.

At Netscape, we do not censor user submitted content based on our own personal biases or whims. We do pull down user submitted content that is deemed by a significant sample of our members as offensive, in terms of language or theme. A video that advocates the killing of any person or group fits the definition of "offensive" for a significant sample of our users.

Event Coverage: Alexia at West Coast Green Event

Alexia, our wonderful video guru on the Anchor team, is attending West Coast Green with Sarah Rich from Inhabitat.com this weekend, grabbing some video for us, and she just sent the Anchor team this email:

Hey y'all,
So Sarah Rich (Inhabitat.com) and I are attending West Coast Green this weekend and I will be covering it with video. If any of you come across cool green living/building stories over the next few days, through Sunday, please post them with the tag "green." We will most likely be posting our stuff linking to Inhabitat and the West Coast Green site, but it would still be nice to have a bunch of other "green" stories on the site so the West Coast Green stuff has some support.
Thanks everyone!
Best, Alexia

If Green is your thing, help Alexia out by submitting and tagging a few green stories with the green tag.

Netscape Video Launches!

Posted by C.K. Sample, III

› tags: netscape, netscape video, NetscapeVideo, new feature, video

We're eager to add more features, and yesterday we added video upload for all members!

You can read about the details in our Video FAQ. Make sure the videos you upload adhere to our Netscape Video Standards. Here's a rundown of the basics:

  • Only upload videos that are yours for the uploading.
  • There is no time limit on your videos.
  • All videos must be 150MBs or smaller and either a .mpg, .mpeg, .mov, .avi, .mp4, or .m4v file.
  • There is no limit on the number of videos you can upload.
  • You can syndicate videos on your website or download original copies of the video.
Have fun!

Here's one I uploaded earlier:

We're really excited about this feature and want to make the most out of it. It's in its early stages, but we want to keep rolling out tweaks, bits, and pieces to make the experience all the better for all of you. Here's a list of things that we're *hoping* to add
(Note: we have to figure out how to make some of these things work first):

  • Video icon will link to a list of all videos submitted to the site. DONE!
  • WMV support
  • iPod-version of the file will have a name based on the story slug rather than some indecipherable string of numbers like 09-26-19-42-10-7050_dl.mp4
  • Videos embedded in special video-savvy RSS feeds, so that you can subscribe to videos with a certain tag or in a certain channel. DONE!
  • Home for all videos: http://www.netscape.com/video DONE!
Any other suggestions?
